Why choose us?

Outstanding campus

Our campus is one of the world’s most beautiful with everything you need right on your doorstep. Explore our beautiful campus using our virtual tour.

Our teaching spaces, high-quality accommodation, sports centre, cafés and bars are all set in 135 acres of parkland and forest.

“I visited lots of universities across the country and all over London before I arrived at Royal Holloway; it was total love at first sight!”

Naomi Jane, Management

Brilliant location

While wonderfully green, our parkland campus is just 40 minutes by train from London and seven miles from Heathrow.

This means there’s an array of visitor attractions, international sporting and entertainment venues in easy reach. Discover the top 10 things to do off campus.

“You have the best of both worlds: a London university that’s based on a campus in the countryside but within 40 minutes you are in central London.”

Mike Perera, Management

Research excellence

We have an international reputation for research.  In the Research Excellence Framework (REF), published on Thursday 18 December 2014, it was confirmed that we sit within the top 25 per cent of UK universities for research which is rated as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.

Our successes include:

  • 81 per cent of our research is within the world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) categories: an increase of more than 20 per cent from RAE 2008.
  • In addition, 30 per cent of our research is classed as 4*, the highest category.
  • Geography is ranked the top Geography department in England for 4* and 3* research.
  • Six of our departments are in the top 10 for 4* and 3* research, including Earth Sciences (second), Psychology (fourth), Mathematics (fifth), Music (fifth), Media Arts (ninth) and Drama and Theatre (10th).

“I was drawn to the fact that all of the staff in both departments are practicing researchers, professionals and pioneers in their field.”

James Pidgeon, English & Drama

Personal education

Our human-scale means you’ll be treated as an individual and be known by name and not as a number. You can also customise your degree programme to match your aspirations, learning style and assessment preferences.

In the National Student Survey 2016, we achieved an 89 per cent overall student satisfaction rate.

“Royal Holloway has something for everyone: it has world class facilities; top research departments; and a great mix of people from different backgrounds.”

Michael Cheesman, Physics

International outlook

We’re number ten in the UK  for international outlook, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016. That’s testimony to the global impact of our research, as well as the diversity of our staff and students on campus.

"Royal Holloway marries two wonderful characteristics: cosiness and vibrancy. The cosiness is induced by the relatively compact nature of the campus, giving the university a unique and very strong sense of community.

"The vibrancy is emitted by the diverse student body; brilliant minds collide on a daily basis, the result: fun, laughter, and academic grandeur.”

Jamie Moore, BSc Criminology & Sociology

Active community

People from over 130 countries live and study here. There are more than 100 student societies, plus regular band and club nights.

We also have a proud tradition of live music and performance, with our annual Play! Festival showcasing the best creations by students and staff being a particular highlight.

“The social life was fantastic, both on and off campus, and particularly around the sports scene.”

Tim Reeve, Ancient History

Intelligent support

We have a friendly, supportive community, with help on hand to prevent problems or resolve them swiftly. There’s a health centre, free counselling, on-campus childcare, faith support, help with finances and support for students with additional needs.

“I have dyslexia and thanks to Disability and Dyslexia Services, I am now more comfortable with knowing people know- and actually care. I get extra time in exams and friendly emails each month from them inviting me to take part in various job placements and other opportunities.”

Career success

Our Careers Service offers job-seeking workshops, careers talks, job fairs and help with finding internships and part-time employment to help accelerate your career.

Our Passport scheme records your extra-curricular activities to demonstrate to future employers the skills you've learnt outside your degree. In 2014, we launched the Gold Passport Award, which focuses on developing leadership skills, for students who've completed the Passport Award.

“I knew I wanted to go to a prestigious university that would help with my career.”

Bronwen Foster-Butler, European Studies

You can choose from a wide variety of on-campus halls accommodation, within a few minutes walk of all the teaching and social facilities, as well as an off-campus halls option only one mile away.

"Royal Holloway is genuinely a home away from home College."
