Modern Portraits for Modern Women: Principals and Pioneers from the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College Art Collection
Explore portraits of the female principals and pioneers of Bedford and Royal Holloway Colleges in our new online exhibition and accompanying catalogue. Their portraits are a visual realization of the intersection between the history of women’s higher education and the development of modern portraiture.

The College’s art collection includes world-class paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and watercolours including works by William Powell Frith, John Everett Millais and Edward Burne-Jones. Recent additions to the collection include works by Augustus John and Graham Sutherland.
The Thomas Holloway collection of Victorian paintings are housed in our stunning Grade 1 listed Picture Gallery and we hold temporary exhibitions in a dedicated space in the Davison Building.
The Picture Gallery and the Exhibition Space are currently closed to visitors due to the pandemic. Whilst we are not able to open our doors physically we have created a digital museum to explore our collections online. You can enjoy audio tours, online exhibitions, talks and films as well a programme of online events. We look forward to welcoming you back in person in the future.
