After 18 years Prof Crampton leaves RHUL but continues to ask difficult questions.

Prof Crampton’s research interests focused on authorisation and access control. Although he mainly taught in the Information Security MSc,he was a regular supervisor for the MSc projects in mathematics. During the time when the Information Security Group (ISG) was part of the mathematics department and when the two departments formed a school, Prof. Crampton was the research lead and also the union representative. He was always supportive of students and fellow members of staff and we will miss his helpful and informed advice.

For years he organised the school’s legendary Christmas Pub Quiz and he managed to ask questions that were interesting and doable for our diverse group of staff and PhD students. He also ran the first of a series of successful quizzes for our yearly Exploring Maths conference for Year 12 students. So perhaps it should come as no surprise that he is now concentrating on a new career as a compiler and editor of crossword puzzles.

Professor Jason Crampton comments:

After 18 very happy years in the Mathematics Department and Information Security Group, I have decided to retire from Royal Holloway and pursue other interests. It has been a pleasure working with the wonderful staff and students at the college and I hope to keep in touch with the many friends I have made here.

I certainly won't be short of things to do, though. I plan to continue my research with Professor Gregory Gutin from the Computer science Department, but will mainly be concentrating on my new career as a compiler and editor of crossword puzzles. You can find my puzzles in The Independent and The Daily Telegraph (as Serpent), and in the Financial Times (as Basilisk). Any time left over will be taken up with the allotment, the garden, choir, reading, playing the piano,...

You can find one of Professor Crampton puzzles here.
