An active social life
An active social life is an important part of university and you can enjoy a thriving scene on and off campus.
The wide variety of sports, clubs and societies, ranging from football and hockey to humans vs zombies and the Harry Potter society, means there really is something for everyone - and you don't have to venture off campus to find it.
The local area provides opportunities for shopping, eating out, history and culture, and exploring the countryside. Because of our proximity to London, you can also benefit from all the capital has to offer.
When it comes to entertainment, Royal Holloway has a reputation for having one of the best Students’ Unions in the London area.
The function hall, with a capacity of more than 1,200, hosts an impressive array of themed club nights, bands and DJs as well as comedians, cabarets and non-alcoholic slumber parties.
Recent years have seen a variety of acts such as Radio 1Xtra's DJ Semtex, Scouting for Girls, Labrinth, The Hoosiers, and Wheatus as well as events ranging from Unitrash by Ministry of Sound to Oxjam Music Festival, poker, Mario Kart competitions and pool tournaments.
We close the year in style with the Summer Ball – 12 hours of entertainment held in the floodlit quads of Founder’s with live bands, fairground rides, dance tents and themed bars.
Watch our student-generated video from Summer Ball 2016 below:
The Ball is the biggest event of the year and has attracted acts such as Katy B, Duke Dumont, Annie Mac, Rizzle Kicks, Nero, Zane Lowe, Girls Aloud, The Automatic, Taio Cruz, Example and Alesha Dixon.
We’re also committed to providing students with a safe and responsible social life, which is demonstrated by our involvement with the NUS Alcohol Impact programme and our increasing range of alcohol-free social activities. Read our statement detailing our aims for more information.
Daytime events are also popular, with the Union hosting weekly Market Days selling a wide range of products from fresh fruit and vegetables, to bakery, fudge and delicatessen. There are also frequent poster, clothing, book and plant sales as well as puppy therapy sessions throughout the year.
The College also hosts guest lectures, music, drama and comedy performances, concerts and tours of the Picture Gallery. Meanwhile our dedicated Student Life team organises events and activities such as bringing reindeers on campus at Christmas, film nights and Halls socials to enhance your student experience.
