Well done to our undergraduates as we come to the end of our first 'virtual exams' term!

Microsoft Teams

Face-to-face sessions had to be replaced with virtual tutorials

Friday 12th of June sees the end of Term 3 and the end of the academic year and assessment period for our students. The Department of Mathematics would like to collectively say "well done" to its student community.

In May, students begun the third term of their academic year. Term 3 sees the Department’s revision and examination period.

Usually, there is a lot of on-campus activity as students take revision classes, meet with lecturers and sit their final exams. This year, under social distancing guidelines, all the Department’s on-campus activities moved online.

Nevertheless, we were able to maintain our strong sense of community and high levels of personal interaction through use of collaboration applications such as Microsoft Teams and Explain Everything, as well as our virtual learning environment, Moodle.

Final examinations, which are usually two-hour exams sat in an exam hall, were replaced with open-book, at-home Alternative Assessments. It was a significant departure from the norm.

Prof. Iain Moffatt, the Deputy Head of Mathematics, comments:

“I think our students have really stepped up to the many challenges brought in by COVID-19, and shown their very best. Under difficult and uncertain circumstances, they have coped brilliantly on all levels and produced academic work of an excellent standard. They switched seamlessly from in-person to remote teaching, getting the most out of platforms such as Microsoft Teams, and keeping highly engaged and motivated throughout the whole period. Very well done to all.”
