Postgraduate taught courses

Taught postgraduate programmes are one-year studies (up to two years if it includes an industrial placement) that lead to a Masters degree, a postgraduate diploma, or a postgraduate certificate.

A Masters degree awards 180 credits (90 ECTS): 120 credits are obtained through modules taught during two terms, and 60 credits are obtained through a project or dissertation supervised by an academic member of staff.

Students who complete the taught part but choose not to do (or fail) the project are awarded a postgraduate diploma.

A postgraduate certificate is awarded to students who complete 60 credits of taught modules.

We also offer an MSc by Research (Computer Science) which is not a taught programme but more like a mini-PhD, with a project forming the largest part of the degree.

Another computer-science related MSc programme is the MSc in Information Security, which is offered by the Information Security Department.

Three Masters programmes are offered around 'Big Data':

  • Computational Finance
  • Data Science and Analytics
  • Machine Learning

All three programmes can be taken with or without an industrial placement, and part-time (without placement).

The MSc in The Internet of Things will start in 2016/17, offering you the knowledge and the skills that you will need to address the new generation of systems of networked devices that are becoming capable of sensing, transmitting and acting on data: smart homes, smart cities, smart industries, and so on.

The programme can be taken with or without an industrial placement, and part-time (without placement).

The MSc in Distributed and Networked Systems meets the soaring demand for specialists with the depth of knowledge and the skills required to help design, deploy and use the technologies through which systems can operate in networks and in a distributed way.

The programme can be taken with or without an industrial placement, and part-time (without placement).
