Celebrating International Women’s Day, March 8, 2021

  • Date06 March 2021

Gaverne Bennett, creator of the groundbreaking Black History Timeline Charts published in the Guardian, 2008 & 2020 (see previous news item) did not limit himself to celebrating Black history and key influencers.

Gender equality has also been an important focus, leading Gaverne to create similar timelines to celebrate women across history. For international women’s day he is sharing his previous fact-filled timelines celebrating key thinkers and contributions in science, politics, the arts and literature. Currently a busy MSc social work student, Gaverne reflects on his starting point and ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality:

"Gender Equality has been a subject of deep interest to me ever since my university days when I found myself voraciously reading all the books on a Gender Equality module but still having many more questions.  It is one of issues that made me interested in social work because striving for gender equality in social work practice is one of its key tenets.

When I started doing Timelines I made sure I did a timeline to celebrate International Women's Day for The Guardian. I made sure that I did a timeline that explained the rich history behind International Women's Day as succinctly as possible. It won a media award; and latterly, I have always made it a point  to try to do something to celebrate International Women's Day every year and this will year will be no different." Gaverne Bennett. March 2021.

Thank you for sharing these Gaverne, look forward to updated versions once your MSc studies are completed.

Highly recommend these rich timelines to everyone - immerse yourself and share with everyone you know to celebrate International Women’s Day.
