Recognition of others' internal states in autism and eating disorders
Previous research has observed a relationship between the ability to perceive one's own emotions and the ability to recognise others' emotions, and my research has found the same relationship in those with autism and eating disorders. Recently, studies have investigated the ability to recognise one's own internal states beyond emotions (interoception), and found impairments in autistic people and those with eating disorders. My current research is investigating the ability to recognise these non-emotional internal states in others, in the autistic and eating disorders populations. This talk will present preliminary results of ongoing work, and future plans to investigate the relationship between recognition of own and others' non-emotional internal states across a range of information sources in these two populations.
