Dr Andrew Armour, University of Nottingham

Embedding a Josephson junction within a superconducting microwave cavity provides a novel way of generating photons and manipulating charge transport. When an appropriately tuned dc voltage-bias is applied, Cooper pairs can tunnel inelastically through the Josephson junction by generating one or more photons in the cavity. Remarkably, resonances have recently been observed in which up to six photons are generated by a single tunnelling Cooper pair. In this talk I will outline a simple theoretical model of the Josephson junction-cavity system and describe some of the intriguing nonlinear quantum dynamics it gives rise to.
