Asymmetry and the extended phase diagram of itinerant helimagnets

Dr Andrew James (Open University)

Ferromagnetic quantum critical points in metallic magnets are often avoided due to low energy particle-hole excitations: instead there is a first order transition to a phase with novel magnetic order. We examine the case of helimagnetism, using a minimal model that includes the effects of asymmetry and applied field; and discover a surprisingly rich phase diagram. We compare our results with experimental observations on several materials and discuss the possibility of using our model to distinguish between fluctuation or nesting driven spiral orders.
