A book on pre-existing music in film by Jonathan Godsall, Teaching Fellow in Music, has been published by Routledge as part of the Ashgate Screen Music Series.
Reeled In: Pre-existing Music in Narrative Film is the first monograph devoted entirely to its topic, and as such presents a uniquely thorough examination of pre-existing music’s use in the cinema. Examples considered include the famous quotation of Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the use of the Allegretto from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in The King’s Speech, uses of pop songs in films such as Forrest Gump, and film composer Michael Giacchino’s self-quotations of his own prior work.
