Being the last opera Mozart composed before he died, Die Zauberflöte is often expressed as the apex of his technical mastery and flare for drama. At the heart of this singspiel Opera is the Queen of the Night whose devious plot for power serves as the basis for the hero, Tamino’s quest. The capricious overture to this opera serves a an thrilling introduction to the centerpiece of the programme, Haydn’s Symphony No. 85 ('The Queen'). The symphony, is the fourth of the Paris symphony collection, and acquired its popular nickname after becoming favourite of the reigning Queen, Marie Antoinette.

This event is presented by Postgraduate Orchestral Conductor Thomas Search and the Royal Holloway Session Orchestra.
