Concert Series 2019-20

This event has been postponed, in relation to university guidelines in light of an announcement by the UK government regarding its move into the ‘delay’ phase of its response to coronavirus (Covid-19).

Director of Orchestras Rebecca Miller and the Royal Holloway Symphony Orchestra open their final event of the Concert Series with Dorothy Howell’s orchestra overture, The Rock. It’s majestic and visionary depictions of the craggy steeps of Gibraltar are matched in evocative beauty and explosive virtuosity by the piece that follows, as Max Bruch used his first violin concerto to capture the intense skill required to play the instrument to a high standard, this evening performed by a 2019 Royal Holloway Concerto Competition winner, Daniel Gurner. Sheer beauty, heart-breaking melodies and jubilant chorales also run through both the Bruch and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition to finish the concert. Musical storytelling at its best.

Programme

Dorothy Howell (1898-1982): The Rock
Max Bruch (1838-1920): Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26
Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881): Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel)
