The Rights and Freedom cluster is happy to announce their next seminar on challenging the rights to offend religious sensibilities. The seminar will take place via MS Teams on 20 January 2021 at 1 pm. The link to join the seminar is here. The event will be chaired and moderated by Prof. Jill Marshall.

The seminar will feature a presentation from Dr. Ryan Hill, Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. Dr. Hill will make a presentation titled "Challenging the Right to Offend Religious Sensibilities in the Face of Foreseeable Harm". The presentation is based on an article published in the Law & Justice - Christian Law Review.

In his article, Dr. Hill uses the work of TM Scanion and some key judgments from the ECtHR as a starting point for his investigation on the potential impact that the right of freedom of expression - and of offending religious sensibilities - may have on communities. His argument engages with the role of intention, the relevance of the double effect doctrine and the potential problems in determining permissibility where law would seem to allow the expression to go ahead.
