Department of Geography Centenary

In 2020 the Department of Geography will celebrate its centenary.

While Geography degrees had been awarded earlier through the Geology Department, it was only in 1920 that a separate Geography department was established. Since then we have gone from strength to strength, expanding our staff and student numbers, and excelling at both teaching and research.

In 1920 the department was part of Bedford College located in Regent’s Park in central London. When Bedford College and Royal Holloway College merged in 1985 to create Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, the department moved to Egham.

We have a range of centenary events planned throughout 2020. We hope that alumni and previous members of staff will be able to attend these to help celebrate our 100th birthday alongside current staff and students. You can find out more at the centenary events.

We will also be posting event information, highlights from our first 100 years, and reminiscences on this webpage, alongside our social media channels.
