In our  top-rated Media Arts department , you’ll enjoy a unique equal combination of theory and practice and be taught by world-class scholars and industry professionals. Our wide range of courses and excellent facilities will provide you with a broad foundation for a career in the media and communications industries.

Wide range of flexible degrees

We offer a range of degrees including BA Film, Television and Digital Production (formerly known as BA Media Arts), BA Film Studies, BA Film Studies with Philosophy and since 2012, we've been running an exciting joint BA with our colleagues in Royal Holloway’s renowned Department of English – BA English and Film Studies.

And we have an array of programmes and research topics for postgraduate students to get stuck into, including our internationally renowned Masters in Documentary by Practice, MA Producing and Screenwriting for Film and Television, which are all taught by media professionals who have held or are still holding high-ranking positions in the industry.

Our postgraduate research students will join a vibrant, international community of around 30 PhD students who are working on both theoretical and practice-based topics.

Whether you’re an undergraduate or postgraduate student, you’ll have considerable freedom in your choice of courses during your degree and will be encouraged to develop as an individual, pursuing your intellectual passions and developing your creative potential.

Equal balance of theory and practical work

Our BA in Film, Television and Digital Production is one of the few in the country to place an equal weight on the teaching of practice and theory, with our students pursuing and developing their practical and creative skills as well as fostering their analytical and critical faculties in the study of media history and theory.

The distinctive features of our degree include a strong emphasis on the practice of film, television and contemporary media as creative arts and a focus on the theory and history of film and television.

This genuinely unique equal balance between theory and practical work make our degrees creative, critical and compelling.

Teaching by world-renowned academics and industry professionals

At Royal Holloway, you’ll be taught by academics with international reputations who are leading scholars in their specialist fields, and by current practitioners, many of whom maintain professional media careers as well as directors and screenwriters.

We also provide a supporting and inspiring environment, with a friendly and welcoming ethos. Staff offer individual attention whenever required and we run a Personal Advisor system. This means you’ll be assigned a member of staff who’ll provide academic advice and support throughout your degree.

Relations between staff and students are enhanced by regular meetings of the department’s official staff-student committee.

State-of-the-art facilities

While studying at Royal Holloway, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, such as a television studio and gallery equipped with industry level recording equipment. You’ll also learn how to follow the same protocol as used in professional practice.

Excellent employability prospects

We’re ranked highly for career prospects and our graduates are extremely employable. In recent years, our graduates have entered many different media-related fields including terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, film and television production and information technology and design.

Others have found success as music video directors, Hollywood script supervisors, independent documentary film makers, web designers and contemporary artists.

You can also enhance your employability by taking part in our recently developed competitive work placement scheme, open to all undergraduates in the department as they progress through their degree.
