Research by staff in the English department commands a leading position on the global stage. All staff are actively engaged in research which is shaping the discipline. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, we are recognised for our outstanding research environment, achieving the second highest score on this measure for work of the highest (4*) quality, judged to be 'world-leading'.

We have remarkable research strengths across the historical breadth of English Literature with textual scholars, cultural and literary historians, theorists, working in the following areas: Medieval Studies; Shakespeare and Renaissance; 17th and 18th Century Literature and Culture; 19th Century Literature; 20th and 21st Century Literature and Theory. Additionally, and unique at Royal Holloway, is the growing school of creative writers and artists of both staff and students who work at the challenging interface between the creative and the critical, stimulating innovative reflection on practice and finding new readers and audiences through Creative Writing and Practice-based Research. Our researchers are leading in their fields and invite opportunities to work with new research students.

Building on the work in these diverse research areas, we have a number of research groups and centres in the Department including the Centre for Victorian Studies, Poetics Research Group and Postcolonial Research Group. We also have an outstanding record of public engagement with institutions beyond the academy. Research collaborations are currently underway involving Windsor Castle, Manchester Cathedral, Chawton House. Recent collaborations have taken place with The Globe Theatre, and the National Maritime Museum.

Our thriving postgraduate community is diverse and dynamic, welcoming to new researchers. Postgraduate students in English at Royal Holloway come from across the world, creating a stimulating and friendly environment for both mature students returning to research as well as younger students just embarking on a research career.

We encourage all research students to participate in specialist Research Groups run by staff; we support research students to attend national and international conferences, and to run their own Reading Groups in College and in the larger community of graduates in the University of London. We have strong ties with the Institute of English Studies in the School of Advanced Studies at Senate House, University of London and encourage students to take full advantage of events and facilities available there.
