Cash award of £6,000 for UK students studying a degree within the English department who meet widening access criteria

Two scholarships are available for new undergraduate students with home fee status, studying one of the eligible degrees below.

Am I eligible?

  • Home fee status
  • Achieved, or expected to achieve, high grades in A-level or equivalent (including those with contextual offers. As a guide, previous applicants have been predicted AAA, or equivalent).
  • Offer to study one of the following degrees: 
    • BA English
    • BA English and Drama
    • BA English and Philosophy
    • BA English and Latin
    • BA English and History
    • BA English with Philosophy
    • BA Music and English
    • BA English and Film Studies
    • BA English and Classical Studies
    • BA English and American Literature
    • BA English and Creative Writing
    • BA Modern Languages and English
    • BA Comparative Literature and Culture and English
    • BA American Literature and Creative Writing
    • BA Drama and Creative Writing
    • BA English and Digital Arts
  • Meet widening access criteria of being in care for more than three months OR two of the following: 
    • Attend an aspiring school (low performing school)
    • Disability or health condition that impacts your daily life
    • Mature student
    • Parents/carers did not attend university
    • Home postcode matches definition of lower participation in higher education neighbourhood (POLAR 4, Q1). Check here.

How do I apply?

Applications for this scholarship have closed.

If you're applied, we'll let you know from Monday 29 April 2024 if you've been successful. 

Please provide a supporting statement of no longer than 400 words, which should include: 

  • academic achievements you are particularly proud of and why these really matter to you 
  • why you have chosen to do the degree you have applied for 
  • what your future aspirations are and how the scholarship will help you to achieve your future goals.

Your statement will be judged on how effectively and convincingly you respond to the above.

Applications which exceed the word count will automatically be rejected.

You cannot hold this scholarship in conjunction with the Barbara Raw Scholarship for English
