The Barbara Raw Scholarship is named in honour of a former Royal Holloway student and rewards high-achieving students of English.
Five scholarships are available for new undergraduate students studying for a single or joint honours degree in the Department of English (see the full list of eligible courses below).
The scholarship is a £5,000 cash award (payable over three years) and is available to students with Home or International fee status.
Am I eligible?
You must have achieved, or be predicted to achieve, high grades in A-level or equivalent. As a guide, previous applicants have achieved, or been predicted, AAA or equivalent.
You must hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study one of our following degrees:

Application guidelines
Please provide a supporting statement of no longer than 400 words (please note that statements that exceed the word count will automatically be rejected), which should include:
- academic achievements you are particularly proud of and why these really matter to you
- why you have chosen to do the degree you have applied for
- what your future aspirations are and how the scholarship will help you to achieve your future goals
Your application will be scored based on your predicted/achieved grades and how effectively your statement answers the above.

Five scholarships are available to new first year undergraduate students with outstanding academic potential, from one of the eligible degree courses.
Eligibility
These scholarships are open to new undergraduate students applying for one of the following courses:

f. BA English with Philosophy

h. BA English and Film Studies
i. BA English and Classical Studies
j. BA English and American Literature
k. BA English and Creative Writing
l. BA Modern Languages and English
m. BA Comparative Literature and Culture and English
n. BA American Literature and Creative Writing
o. BA Drama and Creative Writing
p. BA English and Digital Arts
To be considered for this award, students must have achieved, or be predicted, high grades at A-level or equivalent. For example, previous applicants have achieved/been predicted AAA or equivalent. Applicants will only receive the scholarship if they achieve the minimum grades stated in their offer letter. Students must also submit a strong scholarship statement.
Allocation
Students must submit a completed scholarship application form by the deadline, specified annually. The strength of a candidate’s previous academic background will also be considered. This will be assessed via the documents submitted as part of their degree application.

Payment
This scholarship is awarded as a cash award of £5,000 in total, given in instalments over three years of study at Royal Holloway: £3,000 in year 1, £1,000 in year 2 and £1,000 in year 3, unless a student spends a year abroad (or on a year of international study) or on an industrial placement. In such cases, the payment will be made in year 4 instead of year 3. For students on a four year course with no industrial placement or a five year course with an industrial placement, the scholarship will be disbursed in the first three years of the degree course only.
In order to be eligible to receive this scholarship after year 1, an average academic grade of at least 60 percent is normally required each year.
