Sarah-Jane Pilton - Geography

Degree programme: BA GeographySarah-Jane Pilton

Year of study: Third

Why did you choose to study at Royal Holloway?

I liked the family feel of the university with it being quite a small campus. The campus is also beautiful with Founder's being the talking point of the university. The geography department seemed very friendly and welcoming and staff took a genuine interest in each individual. I wanted to go to a campus university and I fell in love with Royal Holloway as soon as I first came here on an open day and could see myself being happy here.

What do you enjoy most about Geography?

The geography department is like a little community. The lecturers are engaging and no two lectures are the same. I met some of my best friends on the first year trip to Spain and also got to know my lecturers on a much more personal level which has meant my learning experience in the department has been even better. My second year trip to New York was also an enjoyable part of my course and the end of year boat parties along the River Thames are always a highlight.

What is your favourite thing about being a student at Royal Holloway?

There is always something to do despite being in quite a small town. Because Royal Holloway is quite small, in terms of student numbers and campus size, I have gotten to know many people well so there are always people to see and have a laugh with. Second and third year housing is all very close by to the university which means there are always people around and using the services on campus while living in private accommodation is easy and convenient to do so. I have found that there is the perfect balance between the social and the academic here which has meant I’ve been encouraged and pushed to my best ability in terms of my degree as well as being able to socialise and enjoy my free time.

What is the student life like?

Being on the Cricket committee as social secretary has given me the opportunity to take a leading role within the sports society, as well as boosting my CV. I have met so many new people through this and I have especially enjoyed being able to organise the cricket tour in summer. With the right people around you it doesn’t matter what you do at Royal Holloway, you are always guaranteed to have the best time.
