Kate Rist - English and Classical Studies

Degree programme: English and Classical StudiesKate Rist

Year of study: Second

Why did you choose to study at Royal Holloway?

I chose Royal Holloway because when I came for my Applicant Visit Day everyone was so friendly and welcoming that it instantly made me feel comfortable and excited about coming to somewhere that already felt like home. I also knew that both departments I would be a part of were some of the best in the UK.

What do you enjoy most about English and Classical Studies?

I love that in both English and Classics departments I can pick and choose my own modules and tailor my degree to me. It means I can pick the things I find interesting and focus on it throughout my three years. The sheer volume of knowledge and enthusiasm that the staff in the departments have is amazing and cannot help but motivate me enjoy my degree even further. I found it very hard to pick between English and Classics so the fact that I have been able to do a joint honours programme in two of the subjects that I love is brilliant as it has allowed me to combine my passion for both subjects and at times use my knowledge learnt in one department in the other.

What is your favourite thing about being a student at Royal Holloway?

My favourite thing about being a student at Royal Holloway is the friendly atmosphere and how easy it is to make friends here. In my first year I lived in Runnymede which was one of the best experiences of my life as it allowed me to make the most amazing friends in my flatmates that I hope to keep for the rest of my life. I will always treasure the memories of  our entire flat sitting down to christmas dinner that we had cooked ourselves and exchanging presents.

What is the student life like?

Student life at Royal Holloway is great. There are so many clubs and societies to join as well as part-time job opportunities and the university puts a real emphasis on helping you broaden your university experience much further than just your degree. I am part of the Student Ambassador team which has allowed me to share my love for Royal Holloway and assist prospective students to make their decision along with meeting many other students from different departments. While working as a Conference Assistant during the holidays has enabled me to boost my customer service skills and enhance my CV.
