In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, published on Thursday 18 December, it was confirmed that Royal Holloway sits within the top 25 per cent of universities in the UK for research which is rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

In the REF assessment, 81 per cent of our research is within the world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) categories. This is an increase of more than 20 per cent from RAE 2008, the last time an exercise of this scale was conducted.

In addition, 30 per cent of our research is rated 4*, the highest category. This is an increase of more than 50 per cent on 2008, when 19 per cent of our research was ranked in this category.

Top performing departments for 4* and 3* research include:

REF 2014 was undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies. These are Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL). To determine the overall REF ranking a number of measures are used.  One of these, ‘output’, measures the quality of all of the research produced by each university.  By this measure alone, Royal Holloway is ranked 15th among the 154 universities that took part in the assessment.
