Are You Your Brain?

The huge advances in neuroscience over the past decades have led to ever more imperialising claims for their power. So we have neurolaw, neuroeducation, neuroeconomics, neuroethics... Increasingly senior neuroscientists – and some philosophers – are insisting that ‘you are your brain.’ That is, minds, consciousness, are no more than an illusion; the real business of living in society goes on in the brain, as revealed above all by neuroimaging (fMRI). I will critically evaluate – and contest – these claims and offer an alternative view.
