Dr Yasmin Khan features on BBC Radio 4's In Our Time

Posted on 20/06/2012

Dr Yasmin Khan, Senior Lecturer in Politics at Royal Holloway, will be Melvyn Bragg’s guest on BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time on Thursday 21 June to discuss the Victorian radical and Indian National Congress leader, Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

Dr Khan says; “Annie Besant was a radical who became involved in many political causes in London - including birth control, free speech and atheism, the rights of workers and socialism - before moving to India as president of the Theosophical Society at the turn of the century. She is very well-known in Indian politics as she organised opposition to Imperial rule and became president of the Indian National Congress in 1917. I've had a long standing interest in her because of my own research on Indian history and politics, a subject that I teach here at Royal Holloway.”

In Our Time looks at the history of ideas and is presented by broadcaster Melvyn Bragg.

The programme airs at 9am and 9.30pm on Thursday 21 June. Listen live here.
