Studying Spanish at Royal Holloway

Spanish is spoken as a first language by around 470 million people across the globe. In many countries, such as the United States, it plays an increasingly influential role in business, culture and politics. At Royal Holloway, you will develop an excellent knowledge of the Spanish language, as well as of translation, literature, film, visual arts, history and popular culture, and you will be guided by an international team of supportive specialists. To learn Spanish and engage with the richness and diversity of Spanish-speaking culture is to acquire the key to a wide range of different communities in Europe, the Americas and Africa. Alongside the analytical skills you will gain here, such knowledge and understanding will open doors to careers in international business, finance, media, the arts, law, translation, travel, consultancy and teaching, both in Britain and abroad.

Degree Combinations

You can study Spanish as part of BA Modern Languages or as an element of CLC, European and International Studies (Spanish), or Liberal Arts. We also offer Spanish as a minor option in combination with subjects including Economics, Mathematics and Music.

Teaching and Support

Specialist, award-winning teachers will actively foster your intellectual independence and support you as you develop your knowledge and skills. We offer three language pathways (beginners, advanced and native speakers), and all oral classes are led by native speakers. Our staff have research interests in film and literature - you can find out more about our research here - and the School is top-ranked in London for Modern Languages research (REF 2014).

Course Units

You will be able to pursue your existing interests and discover new passions: we offer a diverse range of modules on language, translation, literature, drama, film, photography and other visual arts, society and history from the 16th to the 21st century in Spain as well as Latin America: from Cervantes to García Márquez, Picasso, Lorca, Frida Kahlo and Almodóvar, we have it covered!

Year Abroad: Work, Study and/or Teach

We offer excellent opportunities to study at partner universities in Spain and Latin America: from prestigious Salamanca to vibrant Buenos Aires, from colourful Seville to fast-changing Havana, from bustling Madrid to multi-cultural Granada, amongst others. You are also able to acquire valuable work experience through placements across the Spanish-speaking world or by becoming a British Council English language assistant. Where will you go?
