Neil Smith - Digital Media Technician

I am responsible for training students and staff in various graphics, editing and compositing packages as well as researching & recommending new software and hardware purchases. I also maintain the departmental website.

I joined the College in 1991 as an Audio Visual Technician and was responsible for the small TV studio that was being used by the Drama department. After a few years, the Media Arts department was created and I was involved in training students in linear editing. When the department purchased its first non-linear editing system, I was the one tasked with learning it & training students in using it. Gradually, the department has evolved and now has over 40 workstations capable of editing video, graphics and sound.

As the technology moves forward, so must my knowledge in order to be able to train the students. I am now an Apple Master Pro in Final Cut Studio and Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro 7, am proficient in Avid and Photoshop and have a basic knowledge in Motion, After Effects, 3D Studio Max & Premiere Pro. I am also proficient in XHTML, Javascript, PHP & MySQL with a basic knowledge of ASP.

I am a keen photographer and take almost all of the photos for the department website, publications etc. I also spend a lot of my free time pursuing this as a hobby. I have a couple of photoblogs, where I post a new photographs occasionally:
