MA3074 Cinephilia (from 1915 to the present)

Tutor: Steven Marchant

Teaching: 20 hours Lectures 20 hours Seminars

Value: 1 unit

This course explores ideas about films and filmmakers developed within cinephile cultures. The first term is largely focused on the relationship between 1950s/60s Hollywood and the French New Wave, considering the centrality of mise en scène and the auteur for New Wave conceptions of cinema. We also look at surrealist cinephilia, focusing not on the films made by the surrealists, but on the popular entertainment cinema which they enthused about in their writings. In the second term we explore some of the central themes in contemporary cinephile discourses. We examine the legacy of the New Wave, considering its importance for the 'Movie Mutations' critics of the 1990s, and we look at debates around the 'cinephile moment' and the 'death of cinema'. In the last part of the course we study the work of two major contemporary filmmakers: Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Pedro Costa.
