The summer refurb project saw the clear out and repurposing of our TV Studio into a cutting edge, flexible digital studio modelled on BBC’s Radio 1 and Google TV. The redesign allows us more space and, including the new ‘Studio 2’ space that seats 35 students and features a 65” Smart board interactive panel using Digital Vision Touch technology, and lightweight equipment.
We’ve installed a brand new gallery modelled on BBC Radio 1’s ‘Live Lounge’ productions. “The BBC kindly showed us around their studios & gallery and have shared with us their in-sight and advice in setting up our new space”, stated TV Studio Manager Helen Adams. The new gallery features Blackmagic ATEM 4K compatible switcher and broadcast panel system featuring two 42” HD broadcast studio monitors, and a new 22 channel SoundCraft mixing desk.
Helen also mentioned future endeavours, stating, “With our new Gallery and Studio 2 I have plans to roll out a regular feature called ‘Live from the Loft’ which is based on the BBC ‘Live Lounge’."Several students have expressed an interest in producing these shows and are already finding the bands to take part. “This strand could be a great collaborative project between us and the music society and hopefully move on to actual music videos as well. We successfully put on an interview style TV show for our Example day where we used the main studio in a ‘TFI’ style format with an audience. The students ran the show, operated cameras, lights & sound. This format could also be rolled out for future alumni visits with students taking ownership of the content”, said Adams.
Along with these plans Helen brings an extensive background in media. “I recently took over the Studio Manager position bringing with me over 15 years industry experience working in Live TV, Location OB’s (outside broadcast) and pre-recorded TV projects for the BBC, ITV, Channel4, Maverick TV, Endemol & Tiger Aspect.”
“I look forward to sharing this space with our students and seeing what fresh and creative ideas they produce”, she added.
