Founder's Library


The Founder's Library houses our collections in Modern Languages, English, Classics, Media Arts, Drama and Theatre, and Music, and is modelled on the Chateau de Chambord and opened by Queen Victoria in 1886.

Finding items in Founder's Library

The maps below show the main areas in the library:

Founder's Library : Ground Floor East

When searching for items using LibrarySearch or the Library Catalogue:

  • Folio and Quarto indicate the book is an extra large item held in Founder's. Folios and quartos are shelved near the other books in their subject.
  • Founder's 24 Hour Loan items, including DVDs, are located near the helpdesk.


Helpdesk opening hours and services available

The helpdesk is open Monday-Friday 9am-7pm  and Saturday-Sunday 11am-7pm throughout the academic year.

During the Summer Vacation the helpdesk is open Monday-Thursday 9am-7pm, Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-7pm.

During these hours Library staff maintain and provide guidance for the following facilities:-

During evening and weekends, there is a reduced level of service and enquiries may be referred to core staff for investigation and responses. However, you can expect assistance with:

  • Self service (issues, returns, renewals)
  • Photocopying and printing
  • IT facilities
  • Microfilm/fiche reader
  • Group and individual viewing equipment

When the Library is closed you may still return library materials via the drop-box outside the entrance.
