The Christmas extended loan period is now in effect. Due dates for items are:

Three week loans       Issued from Monday 4th December due by Friday 12th January 2018

One week loans          Issued from Monday 4th December due by Friday 12th January 2018

   24 hour loans   Issued from 17:00 on Thursday 7th December due Monday 8th January 2018

      6 hour laptops       As normal

      External users       As normal

Item allowance

All staff and students are entitled to borrow from the library. To borrow a library item, and to make changes on your account, you will need your Royal Holloway College Card.

Loan Types

Please note that loan periods can change over the vacation. If this occurs, information will be available at the library helpdesk prior to vacation periods.

Postgraduate Research students and staff have automatic renewal on loans, unless the item is requested by another user. If an item is recalled, it will need to be returned by the new date specified on your library account.

Charges & fines  

Items returned later than the due date will incur a charge.

Students attending prolonged course placements or programmes away from the College are advised to contact the Library in advance, should your absence mean you are unable to return any items by the due date.

Fine rates are the same for High Use and General Collection items.

1 Week Loan 40p per day
3 Week Loan 20p per day
Laptops* £1 per hour

*If you reach fines of £16 on a laptop loan, your library account will be blocked. If the laptop is still not returned to the library after this, a lost item fee of £700 will be incurred.

Renew items

Items may be renewed by:

  • signing into your account on LibrarySearch and clicking 'Renew'; 
  • using the self-service machines in the library;
  • bringing them to the Library; and
  • by telephone.

If another user has reserved an item, or the fine on your account exceeds £35, the item cannot be renewed.

Reserve an item

Any item already on loan may be reserved. You cannot reserve an item that is on the shelf, in advance of your visit. 

Reserve an item by submitting a request on LibrarySearch. All you need is your Royal Holloway IT username and password.

You will receive an email when your hold item is ready for collection.

Holds are shelved in the High Use area of the library, opposite the helpdesk clearly labelled with your student ID. 

You can issue your book using the self-service machine, also in the High Use area.

Return items

Items can be returned using the Library return points in the Atrium of the Emily Wilding Davison Building, and in the library foyer.

Items can also be returned using the book return service at Bedford Square in Central London, which can be used by Royal Holloway staff and students. More information on this is below.

If an item is still on your account after you have returned it there may be the chance that it was incorrectly returned. Please contact the library customer services team to move forward with these queries. 


Our laptops are only returned from your account once they are plugged into the cabinet using the charging cable inside. If a laptop isn't returned within the 6 hour loan period, you will incur a charge of £1/hour, so please remember to plug in.




Bedford Square returns service 

Open hours: Term time: Monday - Friday  9:00 - 21:00; Saturday 10:00 - 18:00 Vacation time: Monday - Friday  9:00 - 19:00

Nearest tube stations: Euston Square, Goodge Street, Russell Square, Tottenham Court Rd

There is swipe access to the building using your Royal Holloway College card.

Please return books to the main reception area at least 3 days before their due date, as books will only be returned from your account when they are received at Royal Holloway, Egham campus.

If you require a receipt for your return, please ask at the main reception when you return your books.

Items returned to Bedford Square are transported to Egham campus on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9am.




Senate House Library returns

There is a dropbox on Egham campus to return books borrowed from Senate House Library, at the Depository (building 39 on the campus map).
