Monica Duro-Emanuel

MSc Sustainability and ManagementMonica3(1)(2)

Graduated: 2011

Place of Work: Carve Consulting LLP

Position: Analyst

What does your current position involve and what do you love about it?

We help organisations improve business performance through social technologies. Social Businesses engage employees, customers and industry influencers in the direct creation of business value. Social Businesses are deeply connected to their key stakeholders, and empower them as advocates, collaborators, trust and change agents, helping those organisations become more agile, more engaged, effective and efficient across core business functions. My areas of focus is split between CR / CSR  & Recruitment, based on my experience.

How did you come to get that position?

Previously I have worked in advertising, recruitment and comms roles so this job offered the opportunity to combine all three areas of my experience. Within comms, my area of focus was social media so it made sense to use these skills in the sustainability field where the opportunity to amplify the message and engage in multi-stakeholder dialogue is massive.

How do you think your degree has helped you?

Certainly having my masters in Sustainability & Management helps – often I’m the “translator” between different stakeholders; I understand the industry technology / terminology and can put it in layman’s terms. It also adds a lot of credibility when I’m engaging with business & CR teams.

Is there any advice you would give to current students?

Think creatively about how you can use your skills, previous experience and passion in your next role. Think entrepreneurially, now is the best time to do so and you can shape your career in the way you want to from the beginning. Often opportunities come from the least expected sources.
