Ronda Zelezny-Green is this year’s recipient of the Irene Marshall Scholarship, an award made by the College Student Awards Group. The Irene Marshall Scholarship supports travel to Commonwealth countries with a preference for students in the Department of Geography. Ronda is currently researching for her dissertation on the MSc in Practicing Sustainable Development (Information & Communications Technology for Development Specialism)
This funding will support Ronda’s research in Kenya, which is related to the use of ICTs in education. More specifically, Ronda is examining the possibility of leveraging mobile phones in a manner that supports educational continuity for girls at the secondary school level. Currently, she is performing embedded research in a host school in Nairobi, teaching both ICT and English classes, and helping the school construct a website. Commenting from the field, Ronda said: “It is such an honour to receive this award. Receiving this support will help me and the girls I am working with explore sustainable solutions to the significant challenges they face to attend school each day."
