European Studies seeks to understand the contemporary issues which affect our daily lives in Europe through an awareness of the key events and dynamics which have shaped the continent since the end of World War Two.

The core focus of the European Studies degree is on the theoretical and conceptual explanations behind such issues as European integration and the role of the NATO alliance.

  • European Studies aims to promote the understanding of the development, workings, policies and limitations of European institutions and to promote awareness of the major social, political and economic trends affecting contemporary Europe.
  • Key to this is the development of advanced linguistic skills in at least one of French, German, Italian or Spanish, in order to facilitate an in-depth knowledge of the history and society of one of these cultures.

From the diplomatic crisis caused by the war in Iraq to the global financial crisis and crisis in the eurozone - European Studies students grapple with these issues throughout their studies at Royal Holloway.

  • The roles of the European Parliament, European Commission and European Court of Justice in creating and maintaining the world's largest economic market with half a billion citizens, 27 countries and 21 working languages
  • Europe's response to international terrorism
  • The impact of NATO and EU enlargement to central and Eastern Europe
  • The implications of the development of a European Union foreign, security and defence polic
  • The effect of the eurozone crisis since 2009
  • How member states adapt to being members of the European Union
  • Public opinion and the growth of euroscepticism and opposition to European integration
  • The increasingly internationalised economy presents an exciting opportunity to those seeking to establish successful and rewarding careers. Our European Studies degree produces high calibre graduates with the skills and knowledge to exploit such an opportunity to the full.
  • Students study in nationally and internationally recognised departments. The quality of the teaching within European Studies is reflected in the top-rated performances in teaching and research in all of the contributing departments.
  • There is a vibrant and diverse community. Around 50% of European Studies students come from the United Kingdom, while the remaining 50% come from other EU states and beyond.
  • The degree draws on teaching and research excellence in Modern European Languages - French, German, Italian, Spanish - and in Social Sciences - Economics, Geography, History, International Relations, Management, and Political Science.
  • A coherent and flexible single honours degree, uniquely tailored to meet the strengths and interests of each individual student, and each of the units available is specifically designed to focus students' attention on European and international issues.
  • Individual attention is always available when called on, from both academic tutors and administrative staff, who provide excellent pastoral and academic support for students.
  • As part of the University of London, Royal Holloway students have access to the whole range of University of London resources. Our undergraduates can borrow books from the university's own central library at Senate House.
  • Royal Holloway is consistently ranked amongst the UK's top universities.
