Alexander Lori

"If there is one choice I don't think I will ever regret it's that of having taken the BA in European Studies at Royal Holloway. When I arrived at Royal Holloway, I knew absolutely nothing about the subject that came to fascinate me the most, the European Union. I think that because the dynamic team at Royal Holloway was able to offer an interesting and intelligible approach to the topic, it became my favoured field of study. Additionally, because I enjoyed the programme so much, I decided to continue my studies within the same area; I'm currently doing an MSc in European Politics and Governance at the London School of Economics. Part of my academic success is due to Royal Holloway's academic staff to whom I am in debt, especially the great European Studies team, who not only encouraged and morally supported me but were also able to get the best out of me. The BA in European Studies was especially enjoyable because it also allowed me to follow different subjects, as I took economics and history. My stay at Royal Holloway has been one of the most, if not the most important experience in my life. Walking through Royal Holloway's chapel during my graduation ceremony, I looked back at all that had happened during my degree and, with a big smile on my face, was sincerely satisfied at having studied here."

Chris Tancock

"Knowing that I wanted to continue with my languages, but also wanted to have 'something to talk about', I found the perfect compromise in European Studies at Royal Holloway. My particular course comprised German, Politics and French, as well as the 'core' European Studies modules. I was able to maintain a broad outlook, as well as being able to specialize in one or two areas, for example, Germanic Linguistics. I spent a thoroughly enjoyable four years at Royal Holloway, taking advantage of the excellent standards of professionalism of each of the departments of which I was a member, and content in the knowledge that there was always someone to talk to; the staff being friendly and approachable as well as experts in their field. I left Royal Holloway with more than merely a degree. I am now reading for an MPhil in General Linguistics and Comparative Philology at Oxford University."

Christian Krappitz

"Having just graduated, I am about to start a Postgraduate Degree in International Relations and Diplomacy, in Bonn, Germany, with a view to working for the German Foreign Office. European Studies at Royal Holloway gave me exactly what I was looking for when I was planning my life after school. It is the ideal way to combine a variety of aspects of Europe and languages, but also a wide range of social sciences. To a large extent, you tailor the course to suit your interests. I studied Spanish, History and International Relations. The obvious benefits are the many courses linked by a European theme. There is also the advantage of a year abroad, which is a fantastic experience that teaches you a lot, not only academically and culturally, but also about yourself. The European Studies staff at Royal Holloway are extremely approachable and are genuinely focused on helping you get the most out of your time here as a student. European Studies is a challenging, exciting and rewarding degree programme that equips students for successful careers in today's Europe. So don't hesitate - simply go for it!"

Alfredo Cabral

What really attracted me about European Studies at Royal Holloway was its multidisciplinary structure. My choice of subjects included politics, history, international relations and French. In my view, the real value of the programme is the opportunity that it gives to students to learn how to think structurally and from different academic and cultural perspectives. The proximity to central London is another obvious asset of studying at Royal Holloway. While I was completing my degree I worked part-time at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House and subsequently at Policy Network, the internatiional progressive think tank. During my third year at Strasbourg I volunteered as a researcher at the Council of Europe and studied at the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po). After Royal Holloway, I completed a Masters in Global Governance and Diplomatic Practice at the University of Oxford, and then returned to Policy Network as a policy researcher.

Till Wiegmann

European Studies at Royal Holloway is a well-structured degree with opportunities to develop broad academic and practical skills at an institution that is part of the University of London and hence internationally recognized for its excellence in teaching and research. While I was completing my degree at Royal Holloway I managed to secure international internships at the European Commission and two German blue-chip companies, which really helped me to convince my current employer, Shell, of my suitability for its competitive Graduate Programme. I was initially based in Germany working in cross-European IT projects, and today I am based in Brazil, where I am working as Project Manager for Shell Latin America's Operational Excellence Group.
