TECHNE Applications and Funding

Those intending to study for a PhD in the Department of English are able to apply for Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) studentships and for College studentships.

AHRC Studentships & College Studentships 2016-17

AHRC Studentships

The Department is able to nominate students for the AHRC TECHNE studentship competition. Information about applying for an AHRC TECHNE studentship and an application form can be found on the College AHRC web page. More information about TECHNE Doctoral Training Partnership is on the TECHNE websitePlease note that the Departmental deadline for applications is midnight on Friday 13 January. This precedes the general TECHNE deadline advertised on the College and TECHNE webpages listed above. 

College Studentships

Royal Holloway also has a small number of College Studentships available. Maintenance awards will be allocated to unsuccessful TECHNE applicants.

Application Procedure for those Pursuing Studentships

Doctoral applicants interested in applying for AHRC studentships through TECHNE and the College studentships need to complete a Research proposal, then follow the special instructions on 'English Department PGR Funding Application Procedure' in the tab below.

Application Procedure for those NOT Pursuing Studentships

Applicants NOT wishing to be considered for funding will need to complete a Research Proposal, then follow our standard application procedure by filling out an online application on the postgraduate page 'How to Apply'.

N.B. Our standard application procedure operates on a rolling deadline, with successful candidates starting in either September or January.

English Department PGR Funding Application Procedure

Prospective doctoral students who are interested in applying for a studentship should proceed as follows:
  1. Contact Dr Will Montgomery, Director of Graduate Studies to talk informally about your research proposal and what supervision might be available. You may also want to look at departmental Staff Profiles and make a preliminary approach to a prospective supervisor.

  2. Once you have made contact Dr Montgomery and established that the proposal may be suitable for a TECHNE or College Studentship, then:
    a) Complete a College application form,
    available from here.

    b) Complete a TECHNE application form, available from here.

    (Please note that by completing the TECHNE application form students will be considered for both TECHNE scholarships and College scholarships.)

  3. Your College application will reach us directly. However, in order to fully complete your application process for funding consideration, please send your TECHNE application form as well as the following additional materials:

    • Two samples of written work in English, which should take the form of two short academic essays (approx. 5000 words in total) 

    • Research proposal (up to approx. 2000 words)

    directly to English.PGAdmissions@rhul.ac.uk.

  4. Applicants are strongly urged to contact referees well in advance of the deadline and to ask them to send references to English.PGAdmissions@rhul.ac.uk by the same deadline. References must be received by the deadline.

Creative Writing and Practice-based Funding

Please follow the instructions given above for research PhD proposals to apply for TECHNE and/ or College Studentships, but with the following change:

  1. Instead of two short academic essays, please supply one short academic essay and a sample of creative writing (approx. 5000 words of fiction; 15 pages of poetry; or equivalent in video, sound or other documentation of poetic practice).
