Is material a performative subject?

05/05/2011 (12:30-14:00)
Dr. Libby Worth

This event is hosted by the ‘Bodies, Objects and Performance Practices Research Group’.

  Is material a performative subject?

Three short presentations/provocations by Eugénie Pastor, Dr Nesreen Hussein and Silvia Battista. Questions of embodiment, agency and participation will be investigated in relation to materiality in performance. The aim is to provoke a discussion where the conventional dichotomy of the artist-creative subject and the material-passive object is questioned together with issues on spectatorship and audience participation. Participative creative processes will be explored looking at specific case studies where artists negotiate their position with the materials through dialogical approaches. Through those case studies, the presenters will open up questions related to the politics and aesthetics of the subject-object exchange in the space of performance, which situates the object beyond its physical limitations.
