Facilities

Have a look at this interactive map of the department for information on our teaching spaces; the Department of Drama and Theatre has great facilities including three purpose-built stand-alone performance spaces:

Caryl Churchill Theatre

Opened in 2013, the theatre – named after world-renowned playwright Caryl Churchill – seats almost 200 audience members on two levels, with a third floor for technical operation.

Designed by world-renowned theatre architects Foster Wilson, the Caryl Churchill Theatre also contains rehearsal studios and a huge scenic workshop.

The Boilerhouse

practical facilities

We use a converted 19th century boiler room that once heated Founder’s Building as one of our performance spaces. This is a huge and atmospheric ‘found’ space in which we’ve installed a sprung dance floor.

It is ideal for movement-based and environmental work. The cobbled courtyard outside also makes an interesting and focused performance space.

Handa Noh Theatre

facilties

Our Handa Noh Theatre is a unique asset, being the first - and one of the only - authentic Japanese Noh stages outside of Japan.

Its square wooden stage has been used for movement work of many different kinds and the audience space can easily be transformed into a performance space with fewer cultural resonances.

Technical specifications

facilities

The Drama department has a wide range of technical equipment, from large lighting set ups to video and sound mixers as well as a plethora of staging. We also have a well-stocked wardrobe and modern well-equipped workshop. You’re free to book rehearsal rooms and performance spaces outside teaching hours, as long as they are not needed for departmental activities.
