The Boilerhouse

The Boilerhouse accommodates undergraduates, postgraduates and theatre professionals, providing them with a unique space in which to try out new approaches to theatre practice. It offers:

  • a powerhouse for new creative work in the field of performance
  • a versatile space for the development and documentation of new theatre practice
  • an inspirational venue where theatre professionals, students, scholars and alumni can collaborate in making new work
  • a synthesis of multimedia technology and the atmosphere of a unique Victorian building

Expansion and enhancement of the Boilerhouse continues to compliment the inventive work already carried out in the department's old 'black box' Studio Theatre, the Japanese , and the .

These renovations have enabled the Drama Department to provide additional space and resources for physical theatre and dance, provide additional teaching space, and secure a public performance licence to enable the showcasing of results of research projects to diverse audiences in a variety of performances.

The Boilerhouse Theatre boasts a sprung and heated dance floor, high-end acoustic insulation from the nearby A30, motorised truss, and motorised dead blackout over the skylight that provides our students with a flexible, raw teaching space retaining all of the building's original history and character.

The Boilerhouse, once the generator of heat and power for the entire college, provides a beautiful, fantastic performance space for the Drama Department.
