BSc/MSci in Information Security

The specialist Computer Science degree in Information Security is being offered in order to meet the need for skilled graduates in this area. In this degree, cybersecurity is taught in an integrated fashion, with all students learning basic principles. You will receive a solid grounding in computer science in addition to specialist courses introducing you to critical and highly relevant aspects of cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity modules are taught by staff from the Information Security Group (ISG) – one of the largest and most established security groups in the world. ISG is recognised by government and industry as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research.  This  ensures that, as threats evolve rapidly and continuously, our curriculum stays aligned with the latest solutions and technologies.

You can opt for a Year in Industry degree, in which case you will be placed at a company at the end of your second year if you are on the BSc or at the end of the third year if you are on the MSci. ISG has very strong links with industry and organise several networking activities and events throughout the year with industrial partners, including HP, Vodafone, Orange, McAfee, Thales, KPMG, PwC, Deloitte's, Mastercard, Visa, and Intel.

Accreditation

The BSc and MSci degrees are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), by the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education (EQANIE) and by GCHQ (only two integrated masters in the UK have received GCHQ certtification). Note that accreditations are provisional until  the first cohort of students graduates.

Note that GCHQ runs the CyberFirst bursary scheme, which could award you £4,000 for each year of degree study.

Year One (BSc and MSci)

The first year is shared with the other single-honours Computer Science degrees. You learn essential programming methods and techniques, and you acquire the mathematical background that you will need to learn more advanced topics in the rest of your degree.

In the second year, you learn software engineering methods and techniques, and take specialist modules on information security, including computer and network security.

Year Three (BSc)

During the third year of the BSc, you do an individual project (worth 25% of the year) and learn about cryptography (the practice and study of techniques for secure communication such as encryption) and topics in malicious software (malware). You can also choose from a wide range of options in advanced technologies as well as cutting-edge topics.

  • Applications of Cryptography
  • Malicious Software
  • Four electives (see list)

Year Three (MSci)

During the third year, you learn about cryptography (the practice and study of techniques for secure communication such as encryption) and topics in malicious software (malware). You can also choose from a wide range of options in advanced technologies as well as cutting-edge topics.

Year Four (MSci)

During the fourth year of the MSci, you take modules from our MSc programmes and do an individual project, also at masters level. (worth 50% of the year).
