Odyssey: the Musical

Odyssey: the Musical is a unique re-imagining of the timeless Greek myth, told through dance and original music. A debut musical by current Royal Holloway student Khamsina, this highly original and award-winning production draws on elements of classical opera, pop, jazz, club, electronic, hip hop and traditional musical theatre.

Winner of Best Original Production at the University of Toronto Drama Coalition Awards 2013, Odyssey: the Musical is based on the epic poem written by Ancient Greek author Homer and has been hailed as “phenomenal” by ThumbsUp Toronto. A student of Classics at Royal Holloway, Khamsina’s studies have had a huge influence on her writing; "the Ancient Greeks sang and danced and treasured the power of music. We're restoring that."

The story focuses on heroic husband-and-wife pair Odysseus and Penelope. The resourcefulness of these two strong, independent characters sees them through ten years of separation and helps them through battles, near-misses with mythical beasts and brushes with the Underworld.

The Maidenhead production will see Odysseus played by Stephen Kellet and Penelope by Greek soprano Elli Koutsouli. Bella Brown, who appears as the Goddess Athena, enthused “it's really exciting … really collaborative."

With a local cast and crew, the five performances of Odyssey: the Musical at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead are set to breathe new life into this ancient tale and bring Homer’s masterpiece to a 21st century audience.

Odyssey: the Musical will be showing at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on 2, 3, 4 and twice on 5 April 2014
