Last month Royal Holloway’s fencing club, the Royal Blades, attended Challenge X-SYSTRA – an international fencing competition held in Paris. The two-day competition saw Helen Rowland from the Department of Classics come 10th out of 22 competitors in the Ladies’ Sabre Individuals; an experience the final year Classics student described as “wonderful”.

Helen went on to fight her way to the Team Fencing final the next day. Her team was made up of fencers from across Europe and managed to achieve second place in the competition. The team beat their goal of twenty hits and ended the match 29-45 against the winning team from Bordeaux; “we had different strengths as fencers which we used to optimise our outcome” says Helen. As second prize winners, each team member was presented with a new sabre.
