Problem solving/Investigating/Analysing skills

                                                                                       Reflect on these factors

  • analysing facts/situations/spoken or written information
  • applying creative thinking to develop new ideas or appropriate solutions for any problems
  • planning / implementing / delegating tasks and processes
  • finding / investigating / researching relevant sources of data in a systematic manner
  • collecting / collating / summarising data
  • utilising results of investigation effectively
  • resolving conflict
  • setting goals
  • motivating others
  • giving constructive criticism / feedback
  • making quick informed decisions
  • identifying options/creative solutions
  • experimenting with new methods

Problem solving skills do not just apply to mathematics or economics students. Employers value them and they are seen as one of the key skills acquired through a degree. The means of assessing such skills will vary depending on the job being applied for. Computer Science roles, for example, will generally look at solving technical problems whereas Professional Services may look at responding to a customer dilemma.

Improving your problem solving skills

  • Think of new ways to tackle an academic assignment
  • In your vacation or part-time job, look for alternative ways of doing tasks
  • If you are involved in a sports club or society, think about ways of revitalising it
  • Explore the many videos on problem solving skills available on youtube
  • Attend employer presentations and speak to them about improving your skills
  • Stretch your brain! Do crosswords, sudoku and other brainteasers
  • Practice online tests
