Anna Hemmings MBE

BSc (Econ) Economics & Management Studies, 2001 RHBNC and Honorary Fellow

Anna is the world's most successful female canoeist, having held 6 world marathon canoe championships and made two Olympic appearances. She retired as a professional sportswoman in 2009 and is now a Special Olympics Great Britain Ambassador. Anna was struck down with chronic fatigue syndrome in 2003 and was sidelined for two years, leaving her to question her future in a sport she first took up as an eight-year-old. She battled back to win marathon World Championship gold for the fourth time in 2005 and successfully defended her title twice more in 2006 and 2007. She is now the Director and co-founder of Beyond the Barriers, an organisation dedicated to improving health and performance in individuals and organisations. Anna is adept at translating the lessons that she learned in sport and into the business world and as such is an excellent presenter, workshop facilitator, performance coach and licensed 1:1 HeartMath coach. Anna was named The Sunday Times Sports Woman of the Year Awards where she won the 2005 Champions Award and by the BBC when she was voted 2007 BBC London Sports Personality of the Year. Anna was awarded an MBE in the 2010 New Year’s honours list for services to sport.
