Students' writing skills celebrated

Posted on 23/09/2011

Students who have demonstrated their writing prowess through an online writing skills tutorial programme will be congratulated at a special ceremony at Royal Holloway, University of London on Monday (26 September).

Students studying Arts subjects at the College were enrolled on the Writing Skills Quiz, a programme designed by Dr Timothy Chesters, from the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures as a self-guided diagnostic and tutorial tool.

The programme is designed to improve spelling and punctuation, structure and argument and conventions of presentation through a series of structured questions and feedback.

A special ceremony will be held on Monday to celebrate the success of the students and of the Writing Skills Quiz and those who obtained a distinction, by scoring 80% or more, were awarded certificates. The Writing Skills Quiz is now available to all students via Moodle, the College’s course management system.

Dr Alex Windscheffel, Associate Dean (Teaching), said: “Employers are increasingly telling us that one of the chief qualities they look for in a graduate is the ability to write well. This Quiz, with its built-in tuition, is designed to help students to develop and reflect upon their writing skills so that they can excel in their university studies, and in the future once they enter into full-time employment. We are delighted with the good feedback the Writing Skills Quiz has received from our students and on the positive impact it has had on their studies.”
