Christian Ward

Christian Ward, who is studying an MA in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway, University of London, won first place in the East Riding Open Poetry Competition for his poem ‘Girl on the District Line.’

The competition forms part of the Bridlington Poetry Festival which receives funding from Arts Council England and East Riding Libraries to promote creative writing, and will take place in June.

Delighted with his win and the £500 prize money, Christian said: “I was immensely happy to win my first poetry competition. I am grateful to the support of my tutors, Professor Andrew Motion and Professor Jo Shapcott, as well as my fellow students.

“My poem is based on an experience of coming home on the tube one day, seeing everyone on their iPods and imagining what it would be like to be in their closed off world. The MA has been enormously helpful. The encouragement and advice of my tutors has given me the confidence to develop as a writer and I look forward to more success in the future.”

Girl on the District Line

Reach into her eyes
and you might scoop
a handful of koi

turning the carriage
walls gold and orange;
a smattering of lily

pads, frogs, water
boatmen and sticklebacks.
If you′re lucky, a heron
still at the water′s edge.
