Budding entrepreneurs head to campus for Young Enterprise competition

Posted on 24/06/2013

Commando named the South East Company of the Year 2013

Young entrepreneurs from the South East of England were brought together at Royal Holloway last week, to compete in the regional stage of a national Young Enterprise Company of the Year competition 2013.

Nine companies from across the region were competing to take home the top prize of ‘South East Company of the Year 2013’ after taking part in a Young Enterprise scheme to set up and run their own businesses for a year with the help of business mentors.

After a grilling by the judges, it was a team of students from Downe House School, West Berkshire who scooped the coveted top prize of South East Company of the Year 2013 with their business Commando - a company specialising in the development and selling of beanie and sports hats. In particular, their innovative, professional and far reaching social media strategy helped them to bag the top award.

They will now go on to represent the region at the National Company of the Year Finals in London on 1 July.

Commando’s Managing Director, Florence Dowler said: “We have had an amazing day. The competition was really tough, and it was a pleasant surprise to have won. We look forward to the next stage in London.”

More than 5000 14 to 18-year-olds in schools and colleges across the region have taken part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme this year and set up a total of 392 businesses with help from local business volunteers.

Nancy Bentley, Royal Holloway’s Outreach Officer said: “We are very happy to be supporting Young Enterprise with the South East Regional Final and Awards.

“Entrepreneurship is a prominent theme here at Royal Holloway, which was originally founded by the Victorian entrepreneur Thomas Holloway. The entrepreneurial spirit is still thriving today on campus with active student societies such as Royal Holloway Entrepreneurs, who offer students the chance to compete in the London Apprentice, pitch ideas in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition, and even set up a shop at the award winning Night Market event.

“Young Enterprise’s Regional Finalists have worked incredibly hard and we are delighted to celebrate their achievements at Royal Holloway.”
