The Big Bang Experience!

A brief history and future of the Large Hadron Collider If you're familiar with The Big Bang Theory on TV, you may think of particle physicists as an odd bunch! Why do boffins spend their time in huge underground labs like CERN accelerating particles in endless circles like a giant train set? How do you get a train of particles to nearly the speed of light anyway, and why would you want to? What happens when the particles collide and might anything go wrong?

Find out from Particle Accelerator Physicist Dr Stephen Gibson, and friends, as they present live demonstrations on the wonders of the Large Hadron Collider, and how it is unlocking the secrets of nature. Learn why it was built, how it works and how Royal Holloway’s team are helping to stop it self-destruct (again) in an explosion of liquid helium!

Warning: loud demonstrations; not for the faint of heart!

All welcome, admission free.  Please click here to book your ticket(s).
