Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Quality & Standards)

Matthew Humphreys is Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Quality & Standards). He joined Royal Holloway in 2017 and has held different positions in the College before his current roles (Head of the former School of Law, and Dean of the former Faculty of Management Economics & Law).

Matthew also leads the School of Law & Social Sciences, where the College’s academic disciplines of criminology, economics, forensic psychology, international relations, law, philosophy, politics, social work and sociology sit. As Executive Dean, Matthew led on the delivery and development of the research, education and student experience in these subject areas and is a member of the College Executive Board.

As Vice-Principal, Matthew oversaw the effectiveness of quality and standards across the College’s taught course provision and for research degrees, working closely with the Senior Vice-Principal (Education). In this role Matthew chaired a number of College committees dealing with educational matters and our courses and curriculum, and led projects on assessment strategy and curriculum design and development.

Matthew is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Professor of Law, with interests in European Union law, environmental law, regeneration and social justice. He is a Professor at the University of Notre Dame and a Fellow at the Management Centre, Innsbruck. He has been an external examiner for the University of Law, Oxford Brookes, Winchester and Greenwich universities.

He has previously held academic leadership positions at the University of East London – as Dean of the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, and Kingston University as Head of the School of Law, and then Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law. Before that, Matthew worked at the University of Surrey and Anglia Polytechnic University.

In his spare time Matthew enjoys cycling, skiing, kayaking and SUP (paddleboarding), he is a governor at RGS and a trained CEDR mediator.
