Course structure
Core Modules
Term 1
-
In this module, students develop a solid grounding in the methodologies and skills they will use across the other modules of the Course and for their final independent project. These include project design and management, data collection, mixed methods and triangulation, data analysis, the use of mapping software and leadership and teamworking.
-
This module aims to empower healthcare professionals with the comprehensive knowledge, skills, and understanding required to make informed decisions based on evidence, ensuring that healthcare delivery is responsible, collaborative, effective, and sustainable. The module is designed to guide and support healthcare professionals in developing the expertise to make evidence-informed decisions. The key contents include formulating and refining clinical questions, searching for and evaluating research evidence, incorporating evidence into practice, communicating evidence to patients and colleagues and how implementing evidence-based practice at an individual and organisational level.
-
This module enables students to plan, conduct, and report on a piece of relevant and topical research within the remit of Health & Wellbeing Management. Students will receive support from their supervisors as they further develop their research plans, apply for ethical approval, and undertake their research. Students will build upon the project for which they developed a research proposal in their Research Skills module. They will then produce a full written report of their project, justifying their methods and critically presenting and discussing their findings.
Term 2 and 3
-
This module examines the environmental conditions that impact human health, including access to and availability of nutritious food; the importance of clean water and sanitation as a major determinant of health; and critiques current movements to re-introduce nature and more natural diets, green space and natural ways of living into modern cities. The role of the Sustainable Development Goals in human health will be critiqued, including monitoring mechanisms. The module will cover the uneven development of the Global North and Global South, the factors impacting health in peri-urban and informal settlements, urban conurbations and the health advantages and disadvantages of urban living.
-
This module examines theories of behaviour change in relation to lifestyle management. It also considers the barriers and facilitators that influence individuals in making lifestyle changes. As a 30-credit module, it addresses the key components of a healthy lifestyle in relation to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and considers the principles of behaviour change for improving health and wellbeing in these contexts.
-
This module will explore self-care options employed to promote health and wellbeing, as well as to prevent and manage long-term conditions, and will consider approaches to empower patients to make informed choices and take responsibility for their own health.
-
The module will cover a variety of topics in adjustment and well-being delivered by experts on the topics and practitioners. These will include measurement of well-being, antecedents and consequences of well-being, ill-being and health psychology. Some example topics include materialism and well-being, delusions, and adjustment of personal values to life transitions.
Teaching & assessment
The course modular structure blends expertise on individual and intersecting factors from lifestyle behaviour through to health provision and environmental factors. Teaching and learning is closely informed by the active research of staff within the Departments. You’ll learn through a mix of formal lectures, seminar discussions and oral presentations, guided independent research, guided independent study, coursework essays, and a dissertation.
Assessment of knowledge and understanding is typically through written work. Formative feedback will be provided continuously through informal oral feedback in seminars and more formally through written feedback on summative assessment. Full details of the assessments for individual modules can be obtained from the Departments. The way in which each module on the degree course is assessed will vary. Assessments listed as 'summative' will count towards the overall mark for the module, and potentially the degree classification. On successful completion of the module students will gain the credits listed.
'Coursework' might typically include a written assignment, like an essay, a report, dissertation or portfolio. 'Practical assessments' might include an oral assessment or presentation, or a demonstration of practical skills required for the particular module.
