Assessment Centres

An invitation to an Assessment Centre is proof that the employer considers you to be a good candidate for the job. Preparing properly will help you to perform well and convince the employer to make you a job offer.

Preparation

When preparing for an Assessment Centre:

  • Try to find out what will be covered:Recruiters increasingly use a battery of tests and assessment exercises in their selection processes. They will be looking at capabilities and potential, but also how well an individual is likely to fit with the organisation’s culture, values and practices.
  • An Assessment Centre might include an E-tray exercise, a Group exercise, a Writing exercise, a Presentation and an Interview, as well as Numerical and/or Verbal ability tests.
  • Watch the "Assessment Centres" DVD in the Careers Service.
  • Familiarise yourself with the different types of test and practise taking them to improve technique. (Further information and testing materials are available in the Careers Service.)
  • Practice psychometric tests online. Email Janette Back in the Careers Service to give you access to our specialist Kenexa software. See also numeracy and verbal and written communication for more online tests.
  • Think about your strengths and how you might be able to demonstrate them in a group exercise.
